A "cheat code" is a key sequence, password, or series of steps in a game that unlock, reveal, or give you something secret or hidden that you would not normally get . An example would be list of controller buttons to hit in a certain order to skip a level, unlock a new car, or activate a specific mode (like being invisible, bulletproof, stronger, etc.).
